Urgent FSA alert about smoked fish Listeria risk
At Aerona we believe it is our duty to pass on this Listeria risk warning

On Friday we received an urgent email message from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) warning of a severe risks to health from specific ready-to-eat smoked fish products available from Lidl that are linked to an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes.

Whilst it does not specifically affect Aerona (Air & Sea) Customs Clearing Agents Ltd, we believe that it is our duty and is in the public interest to pass on the concerns of the FSA and FSS as quickly as possible, so that readers, if required, can take the necessary Listeria risk precautions and actions.

The two products referred to in the Listeria risk alert are produced by St James Smokehouse and are sold under Lidl’s ‘Delux Oak Smoked Scottish Loch Trout and Lighthouse Bay Smoked Trout Trimmings’ ranges.  Use by dates on both products are between and include 20.12.22 and 06.01.23. Both these ranges are now being recalled because they may contain Listeria monocytogenes.

It is stressed that if you have any of these Listeria risk products the advice is that you SHOULD NOT EAT the products and return them to Lidl for a full refund.

The FSA has said that: “Lidl has done the right thing in instigating this recall and their caution is commended. The ongoing investigation into a Listeria risk outbreak has identified the presence of a strain of Listeria monocytogenes, which has caused serious illness. We are therefore warning consumers about the recalled products.”

It is recognised that more consumers are likely to eat smoked fish, such as salmon or trout over Christmas. Although investigations into the risks are still ongoing, the FSA and FSS are reminding vulnerable consumers of the advice that smoked fish must be heated until it is steaming hot before eating it.

Listeria monocytogenes is particularly harmful if eaten by the elderly and other vulnerable relations and friends.

People over the age of 65, those with certain underlying conditions such as cancer, liver or kidney failure, or people taking medication that can weaken the immune system are particularly at risk. Listeriosis in pregnancy can cause miscarriages and severe sepsis or meningitis in newborn babies.

At Aerona we sincerely hope that by passing on these concerns we can help to spread the word about Listeria risk and to reduce the dangers.
