HMRC Port Health Authority selected the consignment for sampling and laboratory analysis. – Soy protein – Case Study
Background
CT are established importers and distributors of soy protein into the UK, normally sourcing their products from Canada and experiencing minimal issues with UK import customs clearance. On this occasion, however, CT imported a shipment of soy protein from China, which required additional regulatory scrutiny upon arrival in the UK.
The Problem
Following arrival at the UK port, HMRC Port Health Authority selected the consignment for sampling and laboratory analysis. The samples were required to be sent to Germany for testing, with results expected to take approximately 15 days. During this period, the container would normally have been required to remain at the port, incurring significant storage, demurrage, and quay rent charges. As the goods had already been pre-sold, CT faced the prospect of losing their entire profit margin due to these escalating costs.

CT contacted Aerona for urgent assistance. Acting as their appointed customs agent, we reviewed the situation and engaged directly with HMRC Port Health officers to explore alternative solutions that would still fully comply with UK import customs clearance and regulatory requirements.
The Solution
Following detailed discussions with HMRC Port Health, Aerona’s customs clearing services team successfully obtained permission for the container and its contents to be moved under customs seal to a secure warehouse at the customer’s premises. This arrangement allowed the goods to remain under HMRC control while awaiting the laboratory results, without the need for the container to stay at the port.
Outcome
As a direct result of our intervention, CT avoided 15 days of port storage, demurrage, and quay rent charges. The customer was only required to pay for a single day of charges, due solely to the shipping line’s delivery schedule. Fifteen days later, the test results were confirmed as satisfactory, enabling CT to take full delivery of the goods and arrange onward distribution to their customers.
Lessons Learned
This case highlights the importance of understanding HMRC procedures and the flexibility available within UK import customs clearance when managed by an experienced customs agent. It also demonstrates how proactive communication with authorities can significantly reduce costs and operational risk for importers.
