PPC - Case Study
PPC and the mislaid containers
In January 2012, PPC approached Aerona seeking urgent assistance with UK import customs clearance for two containers arriving from China. The shipment had been dispatched by their Chinese supplier without prior notice to PPC, creating an immediate logistical issue.
The Problem
The situation was compounded when the supplier mistakenly sent the original bills of lading directly to PPC’s customer instead of PPC themselves. Unfortunately, the customer did not appreciate the importance of the original bills of lading and failed to inform PPC that they had received them. As a result, the two containers remained held at the port for over a month, accruing substantial demurrage and quay rent charges.
Our Involvement
Upon being contacted, Aerona acted immediately as PPC’s appointed customs agent. We reviewed the documentation issues, liaised with all parties involved, and provided clear guidance on the steps required to release the shipment and progress UK import customs clearance without further delay.
The Solution
We advised PPC to ensure that their customer urgently endorsed the original bills of lading. Copies of the endorsed documents were sent to us, while the originals were forwarded to the relevant shipping lines together with our letter of authority. On the same day, our customs clearing services team completed the customs entry, paid all applicable import duties and taxes, and requested the shipping line to confirm their outstanding charges.
Outcome
Thanks to our swift action and in-depth experience in UK import customs clearance procedures, delivery of the containers was arranged within just three days. In addition, Aerona successfully negotiated a significant reduction in both demurrage and port rent charges with the shipping line, resulting in considerable cost savings for PPC.
Lessons Learned
This case highlights the importance of clear communication between suppliers, customers, and logistics partners, as well as the critical role that correct documentation plays in the import process. It also demonstrates the value of engaging an experienced customs agent early to avoid unnecessary delays and costs.
Conclusion
Without the expertise of Aerona’s highly experienced staff, their established relationships with shipping lines, and their commitment to placing the customer’s interests first, this outcome would not have been possible. Our proactive approach and specialist customs clearing services ensured a swift resolution to what could have been a costly and prolonged issue.
